Hi all,
I'm working on finding leads for two upcoming stories for ForteMadison.com. I'm hoping some of you may be able to help me out.
One story is on area kickball leagues. I'm hoping to find someone between the ages of 25 and 40 who has played on one of the Madison area leagues.
Another story is on couple wedding showers. Instead of having a traditional bridal shower, there's a move toward throwing one as a couple. The same with couple baby showers and couple bachelorette/bachelor parties. If you (or anyone you know) has thrown or attended one, please let me know!
Please send an e-mail to jessicah [at] magnapubs [dot] com.
Thanks!

| Davis Duehr Dean: can I return glasses? |
[23 Jul 2008|11:09pm] |
The ophthalmologist I saw at DDD insisted that progressive lenses would be the greatest thing for me. I've had them one day--one day too long. I adjusted within an hour to the progression thing, it's not that. It's just that they really limit my field of vision and I also can't see my monitor or sheet music, which was the whole reason I went there in the first place (I had previously gone to Eye Contact but was hoping to get higher-quality treatment from an ophthalmologist).
So, I want to just return these damned glasses and have him rewrite the prescription for what I need it for--computer monitor. My old glasses are fine for driving (no change to that Rx) and I don't NEED glasses for up close, I just take them off to read. So--has anyone ever returned glasses to DDD? Are they reasonable about it, or should I prepare for a fight?

I have three garbage bags full of packing paper, four large boxes, one medium, and a handful of small boxes. We also have some of those postcard change of address cards if you need those!
We need to get the boxes and papers out of the apartment by this weekend, so they're free to the first person who can stop by and pick them up. I'm home all day most days, so leave a comment with an email I can reach you at and times/days you can swing by the east side and it's yours!
Going to freecycle with this notice tomorrow if I don't get any comments here, so act fast! :)

The skull & crossbones on my wallet has turned brown, because I'm dirty. I bought it at Circle K about a month ago. I thought it would be more fun than the boring grey wallet I had for years. It's also smaller than my old one, taking up not so much real estate in my pockets. It's been fun, but I liked it a lot better when the skull & crossbones was bright white.
I chose "has' instead of "have" because skull & crossbones seems like one thing to me.
I lamented in this LJ that "There are no magic mushroom yards on my route." Yesterday, I mowed one. It was the biggest patch of lawn at a small apartment complex. It was colorful, beautiful, and abstract-arty. It may or may not look like that next week.
Sherri told me she's a Republican, and why. Strangely, that made me like her a lot more than when I thought she was a hippie. I didn't ask her whether she voted for a retarded man. Let's just leave that alone for now. Sherri says Salt Lake is walkable and she's done it.
Sometimes I'm ashamed of my maleness. I was thinking "It's not fair that women don't have anything as comically disgusting as a hairy scrotum." I realized how silly I was being after thinking about PMS, sagging breasts, yeast infections, ETC.
Max was shocked but thrilled when Stephanie followed him to France, expressing his joy with passion. Nicole revealed the secret she shares with Trent to Ava, swearing her to silence. Marlena offered immunity to Rolf if he fixes the broken disk. Furious over EJ's tryst with Chloe, Sami intended to move out but EJ refused to let her take his son. Later, Sami was distraught over Lucas being sent to a maximum-security prison. Morgan gave the letter to Bo, who found a recorded message inside
of Philip threatening to kill Paul. Philip denied it and Kate managed to destroy the tape. Coming: Max is determined to find Melanie.

You probably don't hear this one every day, but I'm wondering where I might find a collection of what, for lack of a better term, I call "Asian Elevator Music". You know, the kind of music you hear at a Chinese restaurant. I really like the stuff, but I don't have the first clue where to find it.
I'm also soliciting suggestions for "quirky lamp stores" in Madison.

| Weekend parking in Madison? |
[23 Jul 2008|04:40pm] |
I am so woefully unaware of the parking rules in Madison. I'm only living here for the summer, and I don't have a car, but my brother is going to be visiting me Fri 1st - Sun 3rd August. I live in one of those high-res neighborhoods (where the ratio of permits issued to spaces offered is, what, 3:1?) and we really can't afford to stick the thing in a ramp for the entire weekend.
What options are there for visitor parking? This is assuming that parking rules are enforced on weekends. What hours is parking free/unlimited, and what hours is it 2h maximum? Are there temporary permits issued, or daily permits?
One of my (also summer-residence only) coworkers suggested that since I have a bus pass, he could park at a Park-N-Ride and we could bus about for the weekend - is there a weekend pass offered by the bus system that could facilitate this? Are those lots pretty safe from vandalism/theft? (It wouldn't be too much of a hassle if so, since -most- of what we need is in walking distance - campus/Terrace/lake/State Street/Farmer's Market.)
Other suggestions? Is anyone in the area going to be out of town that weekend and have a space I could use...? I have no idea how these things work.

| Auditioning Space? |
[23 Jul 2008|12:03pm] |
|
Hello my incredibly knowledgeable fellow Madisonians! I come to you with another odd information request.
I plan on shooting a short (5-10 minute) silent film in the next few weeks, and therefore need cast members to populate said film. I would like to hold auditions, but I've got a few problems in terms of where. I would use my own residence, but I'm afraid the creepy vibes that might come with an "audition" at a private residence will result in low (by which I mean "no") turnout. I don't go to school, so I don't have those kinds of spaces available (that I'm aware of, at least). I would like for wherever I do this to be a quiet place without people gawking, and the cost should be somewhere between zero and free.
So, wise fellow Madisonians, what suggestions do you have?

| license and car stuff |
[23 Jul 2008|10:36am] |
Count me confused. Can someone explain to me in clear plain English what I need to do to get all of my license and car stuff transfered over to Wisconsin when I move there in a few weeks?
I know that when I move in a few weeks I have 2 business days from when I move to register my car in Wisconsin. At least this is what the DMV site says "To legally operate your vehicle you must display Wisconsin license plates within 2 business days of establishing residency." This makes me confused.
From what I've read and understand, I can't use my lease to establish residency (or can I, and it just doesn't say it?), so I'll have to wait until after I've moved there and get either a pay stub (won't happen until Sept 1), a local bank account statement older than 30 days, or a utility bill older than 30 days. But that puts me in a quandary because my current registration on my car expires pretty much right as I'm moving to Wisconsin, so I'd rather not wait to change everything over and have to renew here just to move a few days later.
I hope my question makes sense, as this is make me feel teh dum.
Oh, and thanks everyone for all the bank suggestions the other day. I'll probably go with UWCU.
